Just Say No to Fast Track

FAST TRACK transfers the authority to make trade policy from Congress to the President, eroding democratic participation and essential checks on Executive privilege.

As a result, the Bush Administration has pursued a corporate led free trade agenda which privileges corporate interests over those of the common good.

When President Bush asks for a renewal of Fast Track, we need to make sure that Congress "JUST SAYS NO!"

You can participate in a Signature Ad to urge members of Congress to "Just Say No!" to renewing Fast Track. Your name will appear in a full-page signature ad in the New York Times shortly after the Bush administration presents its new Fast Track request to Congress, most likely in June.

MAY DAY—Historical Day for Labor Rights and an Opportunity to Lift Up Workers Today

Over the next five years, the numbers of undocumented immigrants will only grow as the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) is implemented. CAFTA is a free trade agreement between the United States and the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and El Salvador. Costa Rica is
also included in the plan but as of yet has not ratified the agreement due to Costa Rican citizens 'widespread and vocalized disapproval of CAFTA. The US contends that free trade between the US and Central America will benefit participant countries by creating jobs and strengthening democracy. But if the results are anything like NAFTA, the agreement between the US, Canada, and Mexico, big businesses will be the only ones winning.

Tyson Poultry Worker Demands more from Wal-Mart

I think it was important to let the people know about the
high rate of injury that came from working on a deboning processing line. People need to know about how people get
injured inside of poultry processing plants. They don’t get the proper care from doctors on the company panel.

I enjoyed speaking to the college students and letting them
know what carpel tunnel syndrome is. I
liked explaining to the students what a deboning line was and how people got
injured working in deboning.

Californian farmworker confronts Wal-Mart

I work for an organization in California named “Lideres
Campesinas, Inc.” as an assistant coordinator for the worker conditions program
at the national level and as part of my job, I give presentations on sexual
harassment cases in the workplace, pesticides exposure, pay and work hours,
child labor laws as well as trainings on domestic violence, sexual harassments
and health. We covered themes on breast cancer and cervical caner.  We
also provide education to the farm worker communities on labor rights laws and
health, and we also make sure that their work and human rights are respected in
the workforce.

Slavery Ain't Dead, It's Manufactured in Liberia's Rubber

Emmanuel B. is 30, a slender five foot three, and a slave whose
piercing brown eyes tell unspeakable truths. He’s not the kind of slave
we’ve seen in the collective imagination of 19th century plantations in
the deep South of the United States. No, Emmanuel is a modern slave in
21st century post-conflict Liberia, and Firestone Rubber Company his
unyielding master.

Labor is Not a Commodity Collaboration Blog

We are organizations that hear the stories of people who have experienced unacceptable working conditions, often for the sake of consumers having access to cheap, convenient products precisely when they want them. The incredible rise of just a few corporations which allows for unchecked market power has continued a vicious cycle of exploitation. ILRF, STITCH, SweatFree Communities and USLEAP refuse to accept the status quo as the way things have to be. On the contrary, we are working harder than ever to develop strategic partnerships with NGOs and trade unions around the world so that workers can continue to organize and stand up for themselves in the face of increasing pressure to work longer hours for less money.
